I'm not a doctor; I'm not a former olympian either. But after more than five decades in this wonderful world of ours, I've learned a thing or two about health, diet, fitness and overall personal wellness.
I try my best to only recommend products and approaches that I personally have already owned and used for some time.
At HealthWithColm.com, I want you to come along for the ride as we learn together, improve together, and set ourselves up for a better quality of life. Life is to be lived. We were built for the outdoors, not for sitting on the couch hiding from sunshine, fresh air, and using our bodies.
I do my very best each week to achieve a good mix of movement, exercise, fresh air and sunshine, eating mostly the right stuff and, hopefully, enjoying life to the best of my abilities.
As the saying goes, if you eat all the right things and exercise every day you're going to die healthy! So I don't overdo it. I'm not a fanatic. I don't buy into the pressurized nonsense that you have to be better today than you were yesterday.
That said, quality of life is so important; and what we do now determines our future quality of life. So let's make the right choices; let's choose health as our most important personal wealth.
Hiking around your city or town can become a real fat-burner and lung expander if you add HIIT-style intervals.
When you come to a hill or staircase, power your way up rather than allowing the incline to defeat you.
So many of us lose a significant percentage of lung capacity from lack of use as we age (mostly from just sitting around on the couch). Powering your way up inclines and staircases will get those lungs working hard...as you'll see in this video.
It's a social activity when you go with a group, so it helps combat loneliness and other sneaky mental health issues. You can cruise along if you're tired, or walk at a fast clip, or even add HIIT-style intervals when facing inclines and staircases - you'll see me struggle in the video!
You'll be out in the air and sunshine, not trapped in a stale gym on a treadmill like a hamster.
Having a destination adds interest, as does looking around and appreciating sights you would ordinarily miss while driving and focusing on traffic from behind the wheel.
Adding all of this together - the social element, a sense of direction, fresh air and sunshine - means you get to enjoy life without it actually feeling like a deliberate workout.
Who cares about the weather! Get out there... a little wind...a little rain - So What!
